When A Game Goes Wrong
On August 24, Till and his cousin Curtis Jones drove into a small town and stopped at Bryant's Grocery (top left picture) to buy candy. Till pulled out pictures of his "white girlfriend" back in Chicago and showed them to some local boys outside the store. After that, the boys dared Till to talk to Carolyn Bryant, a white women working as the store clerk. At the end when he was leaving the store, Till either said "Bye, baby" or he wolf whislted to Carolyn Bryant. Both Till and Curtis knew what they had done was dangerous, so they didn't tell Mose Wright, but on the fourth day since the incident, Roy Bryant, Carolyn's husband and J.W Milam, Roy's half brother paid Till an unexpected-expected visit. When Mose heard what Till had done he knew there would be some "trouble" but according to some newspaper articles he said, "I thought they might say something to him, but I didn't think they'd kill a boy." During that visit, Roy and Milam took Emmett Till and threatened to kill Mose if he told anyone.
Later on, Wright told Money's Sheriff and Bryant and Milam were arrested for kidnapping. Three days later, Till's body was found in the Tallahatchie River. It was underwater with a seventy-five Cotton gin fan which was tied around Till's neck with barbed wire. His face was so damaged that Mose Wright could only tell it was Till's body based on the initialed ring that Till was wearing. A few days later, people knew this event as
THE WOLF-WHISTLE MURDER.
